NYGE Academy

The National Youth Guitar Ensemble, lead by Musical Director Gerald Garcia, offers the highest standard of ensemble training in the UK for young aspiring guitarists aged 13-18. Our aim is to develop our member’s musicianship and performance skills to the highest level, in a supportive and inspirational environment.

Performing in an ensemble not only helps to develop teamwork and leadership, but can also help to build a student’s confidence and social skills. Many friendships are formed on the courses and our members appreciate the opportunity to share their passion for the guitar with like-minded people.

NYGE ACADEMY runs two residential courses each year. During the courses the ensemble rehearse for up to five hours a day. In the afternoon, students have some free time to unwind, where they can use the venues sports and games facilities or just simply relax. Each evening the course mentors organise social activities, which can include games, quiz and open mic nights. The intensive week of rehearsals concludes with a concert at a prestigious venue.

The National Youth Guitar Ensemble was founded in 1999 by the European Guitar Teachers Association, and has continued to grow with success.  Some of their successes include a highly acclaimed performance with John Williams in 2002 at the Guildhall (Bath) collaborations with the Eden Stell duo, which lead to the release of the Festive Fizz CD featuring NYGE’s recording with the duo and with Cellist Victoria Walker. Stephen Dodgson and Alfonso Montes have dedicated works to NYGE and the ensemble has performed in the presence of Leo Brouwer and Andrew York. In 2010 NYGE were directed by guitarist/composer Gary Ryan and performed the world premiere of the work ‘Flower of the Field’ which was commissioned for the ensemble’s 10 year anniversary. Since then they have worked with many highly sought after artists.
